Midsummer Blot in Prison

A very enjoyable and important part of the activities organized by Donar`s Hearth AOR for Midsummer was a visit to Sheridan FCI to meet and take blot for the Odinist group there lead by Richard Kemp. I had long wanted to visit the comrades there and at last, thanks to the efforts of Donar`s Hearth members I was able to accomplish this. The visit was arranged for Tuesday 22nd.Fallow We set off early to arrive for 9-00 am and were soon checked in and conducted to the non-denominational chapel to meet the comrades. After introductions we were able to talk and plan the days blot procedure.

At the appointed time we made our way to the grove the men have been allowed to construct to celebrate Odinist Blotar. It was quite an impressive site, especially considering its location. I had the honour to conduct the Midsummer blot. We had quite an audience, for apart from the prison chaplain who observed from outside the Ve, across the garden adjoining the grove a crowd of prisoners gathered to watch. This of course is not a surprise and didn't detract at all from our ritual; in fact it may have even added certain `gusto` to our performance. Whether that was the case or not, it was certainly a very potent blot.

At the close of the ritual, a photographer arrived to record the meeting. Hopefully in time we will be able to obtain a few of these for publication. Following the blot and photo session, we returned to the chapel area for our Midsummer feast, which was very welcome.

Another ceremony was held as 3 members of the group were professed into it. To be eligible for this, the men have to undertake a period of approval and pass a test to ensure knowledge and a genuine desire to be a part of this religious unit. The ritual itself is based on the OR profession oaths and was ably conducted by Kathy of Donar`s Hearth AOR. with me assisting. Again it was a great privilege to be a part of this very potent ritual.

We were able to spend more time discussing things and answer various questions the men and we had. A very useful session it was. The final ritual aspect of the day was holding a sumbel where many inspiring and moving toasts were made. Though we had been able to spend approximately 6 hours there, the time seemed to fly by and before long it seemed, it was time to say our goodbyes and leave. A very enjoyable and positive day, not just for those who were fortunate enough to share it personally, but also for our movement in general for it was another advance. Another good step also for the Odinic Rite's Prison Outreach Section.

My thanks to all who made this event possible, especially the Metzgers and Richard and the comrades in Sheridan who are a dedicated and well organized band of comrades, many thanks to you for the excellent day and great hospitality. May the High Ones continue to give us guidance and blessings for our holy work. Even in the darkest places, the holy radiance of our sacred faith grows brighter.
